Spring Cleanup Tip #1 - Fence Maintenance

Spring has sprung, and with it comes the inevitable chore of fence maintenance. As we begrudgingly dig out our gloves and tools, it's important to remember that proper fence upkeep isn't just about keeping your yard looking nice—it's also about preserving the life of your fence. So, grab a cup of coffee (or a stiff drink) and let's talk about how to keep your fence in tip-top shape.

First, let's talk about wood preservation techniques. Wood is a great material for fences because it's affordable, easy to work with, and looks great. However, wood is also susceptible to rot, decay, and insect infestation. So, how can you protect your fence from these threats?

One effective method is to use a wood preservative. Wood preservatives are chemicals that are applied to the surface of the wood to prevent decay and insect infestation. There are several types of wood preservatives, including oil-based, water-based, and borate-based. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it's important to do your research before choosing a product.

Now, on to the fun part—fence maintenance! Spring is the perfect time to give your fence a little TLC. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Tip #1 - Clean your fence

Use a power washer or a hose and scrub brush to remove dirt, grime, and mold. This not only makes your fence look better but also helps prevent decay by removing organic matter that can attract insects and fungi.

Tip #2 - Check for damage

Look for cracked or split boards, loose nails or screws, and signs of rot. Replace any damaged boards or hardware to ensure the structural integrity of your fence.

Tip #3 - Stain or paint your fence

Not only does this make your fence look great, but it also adds an extra layer of protection against the elements. Don't want to paint? Consider adding a sealant or water repellent to your fence. This can help prolong the life of your fence by reducing moisture absorption.

Tip #4 - Keep vegetation away from your fence

Plants growing against your fence can trap moisture and promote decay. Keep them trimmed back to avoid damage to your fence.
